Taxus

A conifer native to Europe, North Africa, and Iran, with horizontal main branches and drooping secondary branches, which, if left to grow, takes on a conical shape. The male cones are yellow in spring, followed by the appearance of highly decorative red fruits. It thrives in all permeable, rich soils, including gypsum and acidic soils. It withstands severe and repeated pruning, as well as competition with older trees. It is used for hedges, topiary art, and as a Giant Garden Bonsai. Varieties are also available with a fastigiate shape (Irish yew), golden yellow needles (golden Irish yew), and in a bushy form.
