Prunus cerasifera 'Pissardi' (P. cerasifera 'Atropurpurea')

Large ornamental shrub native to the United States with a dense and rounded crown and violet bark, especially when young. Deciduous leaves bright red at emergence, later becoming darker, oval and 5-7 cm long. Blooms abundantly on the previous year's bare wood with simple flowers, 2-3 cm, bright pink, in March-April. Bears sporadic edible red plums. Grows in garden soils, including dry ones, but prefers fresh and well-drained soils. Resistant to pollution and light pruning (after flowering it needs a containment pruning), used along narrow streets.
