Phoenix

Genus of palms that includes the Canary Island date palm (P. canariensis), with a trunk up to 20 meters tall, leaves 5-6 meters long made up of 200 pairs of shiny green leaflets, and flowers gathered in pendulous racemes about one meter long; it also includes the date palm (P. dactylifera), with shorter and less dense leaves and a slimmer trunk. Some varieties are salt-tolerant, some can be grown indoors, but all bear fruit in the climates of their native countries.
