Ostrya carpinifolia Espalier on tall trunk
Origin: Southern Europe. Deciduous tree with straight trunk and compact, tight, semiconical crown. Dark green, pointed, oblong leaves, 8-12 cm, with toothed edges. Flowers: long pendulous catkins, followed by cone-like fruits formed of very decorative, overlapping bracts. Undemanding species, adapts to different kinds of terrain, even very calcareous.
