Metrosideros

Shrub native to New Zealand (where it is also found in tree form). Oval, evergreen leaves, either green or variegated. It blooms in May and June with clusters of red flowers, varying in shape depending on the variety. It requires rich, well-drained, non-calcareous soil. It is used as a potted plant, in groups, and in hedges in coastal areas due to its resistance to salt spray.
