Mahonia aquifolum Bush
Origin: central and North America. Evergreen shrub, bushy, upright habit. Leaves up to 25cm made up of glossy green, elliptic leaflets with thorny edges, reddish-purple in winter. Golden yellow flowers in March-April, clustered in dense racemes, followed by very showy, bluish-black fruit. No particular requirements regarding terrain, tolerates calcareous soil. Withstands pruning and will also live beneath old trees as it is able to withstand competition from their roots.
