Liriodendron tulipifera
Tree native to North America with an upright trunk branching from the base; lower branches curve and are sparse. The bark is gray and rough. Deciduous leaves are dark green with a lighter underside, turning yellow-orange in autumn, 10-20 cm long, with 4 lobes and a truncated apex. Plants aged 6-8 years bloom from May to early July with tulip-like flowers, composed of 9 pale green petals with orange veins, very numerous and fragrant. Fruits are brown, 5-8 cm long, with winged seeds. Prefers rich, well-drained, neutral to acidic, fresh and deep soils. Tolerant to pollution but not prolonged drought. Requires good sunlight for optimal flowering and has a strong root system, so should be planted away from buildings. Used in wide avenues, large gardens, and parks.
