Cercis siliquastrum

Large shrub or small tree native to Asia Minor, widely spread in the Mediterranean basin. Initially, it has an upright crown, then it broadens and takes a rounded shape. The deciduous leaves are heart-shaped, 8 to 10 cm large, glaucous green. The flowers grow on branches of the previous year or on the trunk, are lilac in color, and appear from April until the first leaves. The fruits are green pods at first, then brown, which remain on the plant for months. It tolerates adverse temperatures well, both hot and cold, grows well in dry and calcareous soils. It is used in small gardens, either alone or combined with other shrubs, and for planting along narrow streets.
