Ceratonia siliqua Standard
Origin: the Mediterranean basin. Large evergreen tree, with strong trunk and large, wide crown. Leaves: alternate, coriaceous, round, dark green. Towards the end of winter, very showy flowers - male flowers are red, female ones pink. Fruit: pods, 10-20cm long, compressed, pendulous, brownish-mauve when ripe with a very sweet, edible flesh. No particular requirements as regards soil, it actually seems to prefer very poor soils.
