Betula nigra

Tree native to the eastern United States with a conical-spreading crown, red-brown bark that peels off the trunk becoming gray or blackish. The upper side of the deciduous leaves (about 8 cm long) is green, the underside is glaucous, while in autumn it turns yellow. The flowers are gathered in dark yellow catkins. It grows best in moist soils and tolerates temporary flooding.
