Acer campestre Standard
Origin: Europe, Asia Minor. Grows spontaneously all over Italy, except in the far south, and is one of the most familiar plants to the rural landscape in our country where it is used also to form hedges. A deciduous tree with rounded crown, often a twisted trunk and fissured bark; also popular as a large shrub with multiple stems. Smallmedium lobed leaves, tinged with pink when they appear and then becoming dull green on the upper side, woolly underneath, yellow in autumn. In April-May, small greenish-yellow flowers joined together in upright corymbs. Fruit: green samaras tinged with pink. Hardy, no special requirements as regards soil, will grow even in very calcareous or dry terrain. One of the most resistant varieties to urban environments. Withstands pruning, however severe.
