Japanese maples

Small trees native to Asia, particularly Japan, where they are widespread in landscapes and gardens along with pines and flowering cherries. They are very beautiful and elegant not only for their deciduous foliage but also for their clustered purple flowers with yellow stamens, while the flowers themselves are bright red. They initially grow quickly and then slow down later. They tolerate cold well but not late frosts. They grow well in fresh, loose, well-drained but moist, clayey, and slightly acidic soil; they also do well in non-calcareous, well-drained, and light soils, provided they are given ericaceous soil. They prefer to be less exposed to strong winds and direct sunlight, while in very light soils or hot, dry climates, partial shade is necessary. They are used in green lawns and as continuity elements between shrubs and conifers. Their ease of cultivation in pots also makes them very suitable for patios and terraces.
